Guidance

SCHOOL - Benton Middle/Senior High School is a six year comprehensive, public middle/senior high school, with a total enrollment of 380 students.  Including the minimum state requirements for graduation, students in the class of 2012 must successfully complete a total of twenty-five credits to be eligible for graduation. The school year consists of four marking periods with graduation in June. Over seventy-five percent of all students are involved in at least one facet of a broad-based activity program, which is notably strong in areas of athletics, music, and student government. Instruction is provided by a district-wide staff of about sixty-six members having an average of fifteen years teaching experience.

CURRICULUM - Accelerated programs are available in Mathematics, English, Science and Social Studies. Honors courses are offered in English, Social Studies, and Advanced Biology with Advanced Placement (AP) courses available in English, American Government & Politics and Advanced Biology. Students interested in vocational and technical programs may enroll at Columbia-Montour Area Vocational Technical School, which is located approximately twenty miles south of Benton Middle/Senior High School.

HIGHER EDUCATION - In the past four years, about fifty percent of our seniors went to four year schools and thirty percent went to two year trade or technical schools.

RANK IN CLASS - Class rank is computed at the end of each academic year and at the end of the first semester of the senior year. All students in the class are included and ranking is cumulative from grades nine through twelve. Students enrolled in Honors and AP courses have an additional four percentage points added to each marking period grade. Students who achieve a minimum scholastic average of ninety percent for five semesters become eligible for admission to the National Honors Society.

SAT SCORES - Students are encouraged to take the PSAT in 10th and 11th grades and the SAT in 11th and 12th grades. The class of 2010 had an average of 492 verbal and 476 math; the class of 2011 had an average of 478 verbal and 478 math.

With minor variations from year to year, the school day begins at 7:55 a.m. and ends at 3:04 p.m.
