ERNEST HAROLD BOGERT
Class of 1945
Benton
High School not only offered Ernie an excellent education, but also
helped foster his life-long love of science. The Navy advanced his
experience of the world. With the GI Bill he continued his education at
Penn State and Drexel Universities where he obtained his BSEE and MSEE
degrees. His career as an engineer for General Electric brought
opportunities to work on major power systems and invent better, more
efficient equipment which saved millions of dollars. He set up test
laboratories, designed arc interrupters and surge suppressors, and
worked on large electric conversion projects, such as the 450,000-volt
DC transmission line between New England and Canada. Ernie received six
patents for his inventions and five awards for outstanding
accomplishments.
KATHERINE TOTH BUCHER
Class of 1965
Graduating
from Millersville State College, Rutgers University, and Auburn
University, Kathy joined the faculty of Old Dominion University,
Norfolk, VA, where she served as Assistant Department Chair of
Educational Curriculum and Instruction and Graduate program Director for
PreK–6/Middle School Education and K-12 Librarianship. Under her
direction, the library program achieved national recognition from the
American Association of School Librarians. Receiving a grant from the
Institute for Museum and Library Services, she developed an online
graduate program for Virginia school librarians. In addition to writing
for scholarly journals and presenting at national conferences, Kathy
wrote several books including Information Technology for Schools; Teaching in the Middle School, and Classroom Management. Receiving the university’s 2006 Outstanding Achievement Award, she retired in 2008 as Professor Emerita.
DR. TERI FRANKLIN
Class of 1977
Dr.
Teri Franklin, Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of
Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania, is on a quest to understand the
brain mechanisms underlying Addiction. She has made significant
contributions to the field that will aid individuals inextricably held
within the grips of this most damaging and poorly understood illness.
Teri is blessed with three children: Adam, Jesse and Kevin Franklin.
Teri’s heroes include Dr. Seuss, who submitted his first book for
publication twenty-nine times before it was eventually accepted; Steven
Tyler of the band Aerosmith, whose philosophy on life is more meaningful
than it may seem; Bill Repko, her unfailingly present father, and Anna
Rose Childress, her mentor, colleague, and trusted friend. Teri
believes that perseverance is the key to success and compassion is the
key to happiness.
2008 DEFFERED INDUCTION
DONALD P. MARTINI
Class of 1950
A
graduate of the Class of 1950, Don joined the United States Air Force
in January 1951 as a private. He retired as a Major and Master
Navigator in March 1971 after a productive and interesting career. Don
had over 6,000 hours of flying time and received several commendation
medals as well as an Air Medal for his fifty missions in Vietnam.
In
1980, he graduated cum laude from the South Dakota School of Mines
& Technology with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering,
Structures. After graduation, he worked for Boeing, and in his final
ten years with the company was a 747 Flight Instructor, teaching many
crews at the Boeing facility and overseas. Notably, he was the only
instructor for the space shuttle carrier crews and the Air Force One 747 crew.
